Arthritis

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis affects the joints, where two or more bones meet. The cartilage—the smooth, lubricating tissue that covers the ends of your bones—allows them to glide against each other effortlessly. Arthritis occurs when this cartilage wears down, leading to joint damage.

This deterioration can result in joint weakness, instability, and visible deformities. Depending on the affected joints, it can interfere with everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, typing on a keyboard, cutting food, or brushing your teeth.

Symptoms:

  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Discomfort due to joint inflammation
  • Muscle fatigue from forceful movements against stiff, painful joints

Spinal Degeneration

What is Spinal Degeneration?

Your spine is made up of 24 individual vertebrae separated by discs that provide flexibility and movement. As we age, these discs can become thinner and less effective, leading to a cycle of arthritic changes. This can include the development of bone spurs and narrowing of the openings where nerves exit the spine, potentially causing nerve compression.

Spinal degeneration is common, starting in some individuals as early as 20 and becoming increasingly prevalent by age 70. The rate of degeneration can be influenced by genetics, previous trauma, smoking, repetitive movements, being overweight, and other factors.

Symptoms:

  • Pain or stiffness in the neck or back
  • Radiating symptoms into the arms or legs
  • Discomfort often resulting from joint restrictions and muscle tightness rather than the disease itself
