Rib Subluxation

What is Rib Subluxation?

Rib subluxation, often referred to as having a “rib out,” occurs when the rib head becomes misaligned, putting pressure on the nerves below it. This misalignment can cause the surrounding muscles to spasm as the body attempts to protect the affected nerve. Rib subluxation can result from various traumatic events, including excessive coughing, sneezing, overreaching with an outstretched arm, or stress.

Symptoms:

  • Mild ache or stiffness in the rib area
  • Sharp, pinching pain
  • Painful breathing
  • Occasionally, severe cases may present with shooting pain wrapping around the rib cage.

Mid-Back Pain

What is Mid-Back Pain?

Your spine is composed of 24 vertebrae with flexible discs in between each segment. Segmental joint restrictions occur when one or more of these vertebrae become misaligned or restricted. These restrictions can arise from accidents, injuries, repetitive strains, poor posture, or lifestyle factors such as being overweight, smoking, or experiencing emotional stress.

Symptoms:

  • Local tenderness and discomfort
  • Limited range of motion
  • Pain that may radiate around the rib cage or along the spine

Low Back Pain

What is Low Back Pain?

The lower back consists of five vertebrae with discs providing flexibility between each segment. When one or more joints in the lower back become “stuck,” it leads to what is known as “lumbar segmental joint restriction.” This condition restricts movement, similar to having a section of a spring welded together.

Symptoms:

  • Local tenderness and discomfort
  • Limited range of motion, especially when moving the trunk
  • Pain that may radiate to the hips and buttocks
  • Potential progression to arthritis if left untreated

Lumbar Disc Bulge or Herniation

What is Lumbar Disc Bulge or Herniation?

The lumbar spine consists of 24 vertebrae with discs between them acting as cushions. Lumbar disc lesions occur when the disc’s outer fibers become strained or frayed, potentially leading to bulging or herniation. This condition is often seen in the L5 or L4 discs and is more common among smokers and inactive individuals.

Symptoms:

  • Lower back pain radiating into the buttock or down the entire lower extremity
  • Potential loss of reflexes and weakness if there is significant nerve compression

Sciatica

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. This nerve extends from the spinal column near the pelvis down each leg. Sciatica is commonly caused by spinal degeneration or a herniated disc.

Symptoms:

  • Pain, numbness, and/or weakness in the lower extremity
  • Pain and numbness often felt at the calf, foot, or back of the thigh
  • Pain can be dull and aching or shooting down the leg to the toes
  • Episodes can last for days or weeks, or may come and go
