Neck Pain

Cervical Restriction

Your neck consists of seven vertebrae, each separated by a soft disc that provides flexibility. Ideally, each joint in your neck should move smoothly and independently. When one or more of these vertebrae become misaligned or restricted, it can lead to a condition known as cervical restriction. This can occur due to accidents, injuries, repetitive strains, or poor posture.

Symptoms:

  • Local tenderness and discomfort in the neck
  • Limited range of motion
  • Increased discomfort with movement
  • Pain that may radiate around the shoulders and upper back

Cervical Disc Bulge or Herniation

The spine comprises 24 vertebrae with discs in between that act as cushions. Cervical disc bulges or herniations are common causes of neck pain. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat this type of pain effectively. According to the British Medical Journal, spinal manipulation is often more effective and less costly than physical therapy or general medical care for treating neck pain.

Symptoms:

  • Often asymptomatic; many people have disc lesions without noticeable symptoms
  • Neck pain that radiates into the shoulder or arm
  • Possible loss of reflexes and weakness if there is significant nerve compression

How We Can Help:

  • Joint Manipulation: Gentle adjustments to restore movement and alleviate pain.
  • Therapy Modalities: Techniques to reduce muscle tightness, pain, and swelling.
  • Myofascial Release: Targeted treatment to relieve persistent tightness.
  • Therapeutic Stretching: Exercises to enhance flexibility and restore movement.

Headaches

Cervicogenic Headaches

A significant number of headaches are due to issues in the neck, known as cervicogenic headaches. These headaches often result from limited movement in the upper cervical spine. Restrictions here can lead to a painful cycle of stiffness, muscle tightness, and inflammation, irritating the nerves that extend from the neck to the back of the head.

Symptoms:

  • Pain typically on one side of the head but may affect both sides
  • Pain radiating from the base of the skull to the top of the head and sometimes over the eyes
  • Headaches may last from hours to days with fluctuating, deep pain
  • Chronic neck tenderness and stiffness

How We Can Help:

  • Joint Manipulation: To alleviate restrictions and improve range of motion.
  • Massage Therapy: To address muscle tightness and tension.
  • Posture Correction: Guidance on maintaining proper posture to prevent recurrence.
  • Stress Management: Techniques to reduce stress and muscle tension that may contribute to headaches.
